Learn to Sail

Start Sailing Course

This program consists of 1 Wednesday evening and 5 full Saturdays to provide an introduction to sailing for adult (over 16 years old) novices.  Tuition will be given by RYA trained instructors and the students’ knowledge and ability will be assessed on a continuous basis.  On obtaining the RYA level 2 certificate, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of rigging, launching, sailing, and recovering dinghies without an instructor on board in light winds.  The club has a fleet of GP 14’s and Lasers for training but we encourage students to use their own boats.

Youth Sailing Course

This program consists of 1 Wednesday evening and 5 full Saturdays to provide an introduction to sailing for 8 to 16 year olds.  Tuition will be given by RYA trained instructors and the students’ knowledge and ability will be assessed on a continuous basis by the instructors.  The course has four levels of achievement.  The successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of rigging, launching, sailing and recovering small dinghies in light winds.  The club has a fleet of Picos, an Optimist, and an RS Feva for training but we encourage students to use their own boats.  The course may be used as part of D of E, GCSE PE and Scout Awards.

Improving your Sailing

Interested in learning to race so that you can start to join in with the regular Sunday racing at NBCSC?  Then our Start Racing Course could be just what you need.  Run by our own club’s RYA endorsed Racing Instructors, this 2-day course covers all that you need to know to begin racing.  The course is designed, through practical exercises on the water, to give you the confidence, skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in good conditions.

We also run the RYA advanced modules – Seamanship Skills, and Sailing with Spinnakers both of which are very practical courses with a high element of on-the-water exercises.  The Seamanship Skills course teaches techniques for sailing in more challenging conditions; and the Sailing with Spinnakers course ‘does what it says on the tin’.

All of these courses are available to adult and youth sailors.
